Undergraduate Programs

Welcome to the Undergraduate Program in English at George Mason University where exciting courses and an award-winning faculty await you. Located 16 miles from Washington, D.C., with its theaters, museums, and cultural opportunities, George Mason is an ideal place to pursue an undergraduate degree in English. The department also offers a wide range of upper division elective courses and general education courses for non-majors.

Our undergraduate programs include a BA degree that offers a versatile major with thirteen specialized concentrations that are designed to meet the individual interests and career objectives of our majors. In addition, the English department supports three minor programs--for those seeking to supplement their knowledge with the writing and analytical skills that English offers--and it participates in a range of affiliated minors.  Other choices in the major include an honors program, a special option in comparative literature, and a program in conjunction with the College of Education and Human Development that allows undergraduates to complete at the same time their BA in English and their licensure requirements to teach English at the secondary school level in Virginia.

In whatever courses they take though, the English major allows students to develop skills in written and oral communication, research, critical thinking, and focused creativity.
